Thank you so much for starting this blog and setting up a meeting! I am so looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteGreat site, we have been coming up to the UP for years (my 14 year old son has autism) - does anyone have experience with the Republic-Michigamme Schools?
ReplyDeleteWould this group also involve Sensory Processing Disorder without an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis. I have two children in our home with SPD. I know there are similar symptoms/behaviors with the ASD and SPD. Let me know as I may be interested in attending your next meeting.
ReplyDeleteYes! I'm inclined to think sensory processing disorder is a very big part of ASD, or at least it is for us. I've heard it effects 80% of those on the spectrum. I had a SPD diagnosis for my daughter before I had an ASD diagnosis and was told to seek out a local ASD support group for direction at the time. And at the time there was no group. Do come to our meeting on Wednesday if you can, and keep following the blog if you can't. I do intend to post resourcers that are helpful for SPD.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry I missed the last meeting. I do look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting and will bring a treat as Wednesday, 2/2 is my 42nd birthday!
ReplyDeleteI especially want to thank Ellen for starting this group!
I also want to thank the staff members from North Star Academy for attending the meetings!!
This is soo needed for parents/caregivers of those on the spectrum and I feel it is so great that school staff and other service providers are interested and attend!!
Thank you!!
Happy to find this site! My husband and I are now the caretakers of our 7 yr. old grandson w/ ASD, and we're very interested in finding a group with whom we can share our thoughts, and gain some insights, perhaps. Looking forward to the February meeting.

ReplyDeleteHi, I am a grandmother of an Autisitc child. He is 9 years old and lives downstate. I got a call from his father saying that he had thrown a chair in the class room. I knew it stemed from his frustration with speech and making himself understood. So I called his Teacher and asked if she thought any Assistive Technologies programs would help. She imediatly sugessted a Itouch and a Program called "Proloque2go" It is similar to the picture velcro images that we used in our note book but this program "SEEKS" Yippie. plus we can take pictures with the itouch and add them to create a more personalized program for
ReplyDeletehim. I just had to share this My Son and Grandson are so happy with this.
Hi, my name is Tammy Krassick and I own Integrative Health Services in Escanaba. I am a Natural Health Consultant and a Biomedical Therapist. My son is on the autism spectrum but with many years of alternative medicine therapies utilized by me I would consider him not to have autism any more. I have tried to form groups in Escanaba but not much interest here. I have a website healthinfo.vpweb.com which explains what I do. I am involved in autism awareness organizations and have traveled all over to help other parents do what I have done with biomedical treatments. I also have helped other parents internationally where autism resources are non-existent....thank goodness for facebook :) many autism parents and groups there !!!!! I wuould love to be a part of anything going on in Marquette and share what I've done for others with kids on the spectrum.

Hello. I am new to this site. I thank god I have found it I plan on becoming an active member. My son Andrew was diagnosed with Aspbergers syndrome in April of 2011. It was a relief to finally get the proper diagnosis but also has been a challenge to find the resources available to him. He had attended Father Marquette school system since he was 4 years old and it was in the middle of this school year that he was asked to leave. He is not a behavioral problem and we were concerned why since this year was also the first year that they have their own in house special education teacher. They gave us one week to find another school for Andrew and we were told that they were not "equipped" to handle Andrew's condition any longer. There was no discussion, they had already made their decision. As we all know children with Aspergers don't handle change well and this has been a very difficult transition for him, he had been in Father Marquette for 9 years. What I need is any information that may be out there where I can fight this. Not so much to get him back in their school system but to right a terrible wrong. We are planning a demonstration Monday May 7th outside of Father Marquette Middle School on college Ave from 11am to 1pm if anyone wants to come out and show their support. THere is so much more I want to do to bring awareness to this issue. If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate them. Thank you. Heather Milliner
ReplyDeleteHeather,
ReplyDeleteSounds like a really unfortunate situation. I would contact Marquette Alger Resolution: http://www.marsmediation.org/index.php to see if they can help at all. There's a lot of information out there as far as what your rights are for a free and appropriate public aducation. Not sure how this applies to private schools. Good luck. If you send another message, include your contact information. I won't post it unless you want me to. If I can think of any more resources for you, I will pass them along. E.
Hello!
ReplyDeleteI am a psychology student at NMU and am an experienced nanny that has worked with children with ASD. I have also worked with a variety of other special needs as a social coach at my high school. I am caring and go above and beyond the tasks assigned of me. Your child will not only be entertained, but I will work with them on important life skills. I have glowing child care related references. My rate is $9/hr and I am available starting Aug. 22 on evenings and weekends, and also afternoons on certain days (I will provide you with my class schedule upon request). You can email me if interested (marah@seaverlink.com).
I am looking to resource a family to a support group for their child with ASD. I was wondering how to contact you and when your next meeting is?
ReplyDeletePlease see the note on the left side about meetings. If you'd like to contact me, please call me at the Peter White Reference Desk: 906/226-4312 and ask for Ellen.
