Ten Things Every Child with Autism Wishes You Knew (2005) by Ellen Notbohm.  Short, easy to scan.  A good option for someone who wants to get to the gist of autism without getting overwhelmed.  Recommended by Ellen.  (I first heard of it from Diane at Snowbound.) 


Disconnected Kids: The Groundbreaking Brain Balance Program for Children with Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, and Other Neurological Disorders by Dr. Robert Melillo. Call number 618.928 ME at Peter White Public Library. Recommended by Kristen.

Unstrange Minds:  Remapping the World of Autism by anthropologist Richard GrinkerCall number 616.8588 GR at Peter White Public Library.  Recommended by Gene. 

Do You Hear What I Hear by Fialka and Mikus is a handy slim guide for parents working with an assortment of professionals and trying to get everyone on the same page.  Recommended by Gene.

Autism Speaks:  From their website:  "founded in February 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright, grandparents of a child with autism. Since then, Autism Speaks has grown into the nation's largest autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families."
First 100 days is a toolkit published by Autism Speaks that can be downloaded from their website. 


Parent to Parent is a national organization with a Michigan office in Lansing.  Their programs provide emotional and informational support to families of children who have special needs most notably by matching parents seeking support with an experienced, trained 'Support Parent'.

Getting My Own Address Guide:  This tool can help those going through transition from living with their parents to living independently.

Autism Collaborative Endorsement

Michigan Autism endorsement available to teachers who already have a special education endorsement.  Available through NMU. 18 credit hours.
